Methodology and application relevance of a safety case concept for a high-level radioactive waste repository in claystone

Within the framework of the ANSICHT project, a draft methodology for a safety case for a high-level radioactive waste repository in claystone in Germany was developed, taking into account legal requirements. The method involves linking legal and geological conditions with the development of a repository concept, particularly a emplacement and closure concept, and a subsequent demonstration of the geological and geotechnical barrier integrity. A complete system description within an FEP (Features, Events, and Processes) catalog and the derived scenario development, which includes descriptions of expected and alternative repository evolutions, forms the basis of the methodology. This project has created the possibility to demonstrate the safety of a site through a systematic process. This structured process can be used as a basis to make the demonstration transparent and therefore comprehensible.
