BASEL

Assessment of the dependencies between the safe construction and operation of a repository for heat-generating waste and long-term safety

In the R&D project BASEL, a method was developed to conduct an assessment of the dependencies between the safe construction and operation of a repository for high-level radioactive waste and long-term safety for the Safety Case. A corresponding requirement is defined in the regulatory framework (EndlSiAnfV). The methodology is based on an FEP (Features, Events, and Processes) catalog for the operational phase of repository mines in various host rocks. On this basis, internal events (EVI) that affect repository operation were identified, along with corresponding measures derived to avoid or mitigate their consequences. Furthermore, the impacts of EVI and the measures on long-term safety were assessed.
