Requirements and concepts for containers for the disposal of heat-generating radioactive waste and spent fuel elements in rock salt, claystone, and crystalline rock

In the research project KoBrA (FKZ 02E 11527), requirements for containers for high-level radioactive waste have been systematically derived for the first time, taking into account the international state of science and technology. To achieve this, the relevant conditions and stress factors for containers in the three potential host rocks - rock salt, claystone, and crystalline rock - were determined. Based on this, the necessary container functions to meet the requirements under the given conditions and stresses were identified, and initial conceptual ideas for future waste containers were discussed or developed. Conclusions and recommendations for further steps towards the development of container concepts for the disposal of high-level radioactive waste complete the project's outcome. The achieved results, including the derivation of a methodological approach, are comprehensively presented in the final report and in separate result reports for four work packages.
