Transfer of the safety verification concept for a repository in salt to other host rocks

The project aimed to transfer the safety verification concept for a repository in salt to repositories in the host rocks, granite, and clay. Both undisturbed and disturbed repository development were addressed, with a focus on effective technical and geotechnical barriers. The results showed that reliability-based verification methods, which correspond to the current state of the art and are applied as safety verification concepts for a repository in salt, can in principle also be transferred to sealing concepts and individual barriers for repositories in the host rocks, granite, and clay. The effective barriers, which vary depending on the host rock and sealing concept, determine the system behavior. Regarding disturbed development, the failure of individual barriers was considered. It was found that, due to the high safety requirements regarding the barriers of sealing systems, redundancy is necessary, as provided, for example, by a multi-barrier system.
